carrier, a Japanese suicide bomber crashes into the sea off the coast of Okinawa, Japan, in June 1945. The ship’s discovery “allows some closure to the families of those lost, and provides us all another opportunity to remember and honor them,” said command Director Samuel J. warship sunk by the weapon which was identified as “one of the first cruise missiles,” and fired up to 425 mph.Īlong with four fighter aircraft, inshore Fire Support ships fought further enemy attacks and began rescuing the Abele's survivors. Known as the “Cherry Blossom,” the Ohka was a rocket-powered human-guided bomb “and the resulting explosion caused the ship’s bow and stern to buckle rapidly,” the release said, adding that it became the first U.S. Soviet Navy did not stray that far from their coasts back then, and certainly would not have started running around the Pacific Ocean until the Cold War years. After the Sumner-class destroyer engaged with and damaged multiple enemy aircraft, a plane managed to crash next to it, penetrating its side, the command said, adding that a minute later it was “at the waterline by a Yokosuka MXY-7 Ohka.” So Pacific allied Op would have been Great Britain, United States, Common Wealth Nations, and maybe France. It was decided in those documents that Russia was the lesser of the 2 potential problem nations, just barely. And as soon as WWII ended we all know what Russia became ( no longer on allied side, they became their own side), no surprise actually since in some documents there was discussion of which side to support in Russia vs Germany fight. Also Russians have often not been entirely included in the list of allied nations, more like the enemy of my enemy is my friend sort of arrangement. Yeah not sure why Soviet Navy would be involved in the Op since they were not much more than a coast guard force in WWII. Likewise, Hermes is a mission that makes no sense if other nations participate on the French side.Īccept the story and stop thinking purely mechanistically. (Though, where are the Dutch? and why are the Russians here? but okay.) The whole justification for this Op is Pacific Allies going in against a protected Imperial island objective, much like what actually happened in WWII.
